Magellan Transport Logistics management team believes one of the greatest advantages to students in having internships is the access they get to accomplished professionals in their field. Consequently, speakers from the executive ranks are very popular. Having a CEO speak is especially impressive. Magellan’s summer 2017 interns enjoyed a “Lunch and Learn” with Mrs. Sherri Owens at the Jacksonville Corporate Headquarters on St. Johns Bluff Road. Sherri is the CEO/Owner of Sassy Inc. Graphic Designs, American Heart Association Ambassador, Advocate for Smile Train and current title holder of Mrs. Jacksonville International.
Mrs. Owens discussed the importance of finding opportunities where you can make an impact and to never let a fear of failure, comparison or judgement stop you from doing the things that will bring success. Interns were advised that with risk comes reward and to remember to always keep moving forward toward their goals.
Internship opportunities have been supported by Magellan since the company’s inception in 2006. Interns are paired with a mentor and given measurable goals and objectives to be achieved throughout the internship. Although the business is predominately operational, students are exposed to all aspects of corporate activities such as finance, human resources, sales/marketing and risk management. Owner Tom Piatak states, “Our interns are surrounded by the smartest and most experienced people in the industry. Their projects are in line with projects that a full-time employee or team is working on. They are going to see the impact of their efforts and leave Magellan with resume building experience.”
